The Lord of the Rings trilogy which was released between 2001 and 2003, made New Line Cinema (owned by Warner Bros.) an estimated $6bn (£3.26bn) in ticket, DVDs and merchandise sales. How do we know? Thanks to the heirs of JR Tolkien’s estate suing for a reported $220m (£133m) compensation in unpaid royalties. Does anyone know how much of that was merchandise sales?
